Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

Don’t ignore these warning signs. If you notice any of the following, schedule a brake inspection right away:

Catching brake issues early is almost always less expensive. Worn pads, if left unaddressed, can score your rotors – turning a $150 pad replacement into a $400+ rotor replacement.

Our Brake Services

Car-X provides a complete range of brake services to keep every part of your braking system in top condition. Read about some of our brake services below.

Brake Pad & Shoe Replacement

Brake pads and shoes are the components that create the friction needed to stop your vehicle. We professionally install quality replacement pads and shoes.

Rotor & Drum Resurfacing and Replacement

Rotors and drums wear over time and can develop grooves, thickness variations, or hot spots. Our technicians will measure rotor thickness and condition, then resurface or replace as needed for smooth, reliable stopping power.

Brake Fluid Service

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point, degrading system component function, and reducing braking effectiveness. We recommend replacing brake fluid at the intervals specified in your owner's manual - typically every 2 years or 30,000 miles.

ABS Inspection & Repair

The Anti-Lock Brake System prevents wheel lockup during hard braking. If your ABS warning light is on, our technicians can diagnose, service or replace ABS sensors, modules, and hydraulic components.

Brake Caliper Service

Calipers apply pressure to the brake pads. Sticking or seized calipers can cause uneven wear, pulling, and overheating. We inspect, clean, and replace calipers as part of a complete brake service.

Brake Inspection

Not sure about the condition of your brakes? Ask about our brake inspection service. Our Professional Brake Technicians will check pads, rotors, calipers, brake lines, and fluid - and give you an honest assessment with no pressure.

How Your Brakes Work

Understanding your brakes helps you recognize problems early. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces brake fluid from the master cylinder through the brake lines to the calipers. The calipers squeeze the brake pads against the rotors (metal discs attached to each wheel), creating friction that slows and stops the vehicle.

Disc brake systems are used on most modern vehicles and offer superior stopping power and heat dissipation. Some vehicles still use drum brakes on the rear axle, where curved brake shoes press outward against the inside of a drum.

Every component – fluid, pads, rotors, calipers, lines, and the master cylinder – must work in sync. That’s why we inspect the full system, not just the worn part you came in for.

Brake Pads & Brake Inspections

How Often Should You Service Your Brakes?

There’s no single answer because brake wear depends on your driving habits, vehicle weight, and the quality of parts installed. That said, here are general guidelines:

Brake Inspection

0 mi

Schedule a brake inspection every 5,000 miles or every oil change.

Brake Pads

0 mi

Change your brake pads every 30,000 miles or when wear is apparent.

Rotors

0 mi

Perform rotor and caliper replacement every 60,000 miles.

Brake Fluid

0 yrs

Have your brake fluid flushed and exchanged every 2 years.

City driving with frequent stops wears pads faster than highway driving. If you tow or carry heavy loads, plan on more frequent inspections. When in doubt, ask your Car-X technician – a quick visual check is always free.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brake Repair

Brake service doesn’t have to be confusing or stressful. Below are answers to the questions our customers ask most – from what a brake job costs to how long it takes. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask your local Car-X technician. We’re always happy to walk you through what your vehicle needs and why.

How much does brake repair cost?

Brake pad replacement typically ranges from $100–$300 per axle depending on your vehicle and the parts used. Rotor replacement adds to that cost. The best way to get an accurate estimate is to bring your vehicle in - Car-X provides honest assessments with no obligation.

How do I know if my brakes need to be replaced?

Common signs include squealing or grinding noises when braking, a vibrating or pulsing pedal, pulling to one side, a soft or spongy pedal feel, or a lit brake warning light. If you notice any of these, schedule an inspection soon - waiting usually makes the repair more expensive.

Does Car-X offer a warranty on brake repairs?

Yes. Car-X offers a lifetime warranty on brake pads and shoes - covering both parts and labor. Ask your technician for full details at your location.

Can I drive with worn brake pads?

It's not recommended. Worn pads reduce stopping power and, if ignored long enough, metal-on-metal contact will damage your rotors significantly - a much more expensive repair. If you hear grinding, treat it as urgent.

How long does a brake job take?

A standard brake pad and rotor replacement typically takes 1–2 hours per axle. If additional work is needed (calipers, brake fluid flush), allow a bit more time. Many Car-X locations offer same-day service - call ahead to confirm availability.

Do I need to replace all four brakes at once?

Not necessarily. It's common to replace brakes one axle at a time (both fronts or both rears together). Your Car-X technician will measure wear on all four wheels and recommend only what's needed.

What does a free brake inspection include?

Our technicians check brake pad thickness, rotor condition and measurements, caliper function, brake fluid level and condition, and brake lines for leaks or damage. You'll receive a clear report of what we found - no pressure, just facts.

Is It Time For New Tires?

Car-X recommends getting new tires every 30,000 or 40,000 miles. If your tire tread is at 4/32 of an inch, it is a good time to consider getting new tires. Anything less and the tire is considered “bald,” and legally worn out in most states.
