Went to Freedom Tire first. They wanted $1300 for an alternator in my Jeep Patriot. Car-X was only $570. Friendly service also. This is the place in Ames to get your work done.Sofa chairs are also so comfortable to wait in and plenty of restaurants next door to eat at while waiting.
Easily the best and most reliable place I've ever gone to when I have problems with my car. Every time I've gone, the staff are always friendly and they have prices and deals you can't beat anywhere else. Highly Recommend!

These people are class acts. Auto mechanics sometimes have bad reputations. Not this one. The first thing I noticed was the ease in being helped. It was comfortable and, I didnât feel pressured. We were treated very well and quite efficiently too. I forget the young ladyâs name but she was excellent in how she presented herself and the work we needed to have done. Fast Friendly and Fair. Take CarX for a spin, youâll enjoy the ride.
Great shop! They do timely, quality work at a good price. I feel confident I'm getting an expert fixing my car and I know I'm not getting ripped off or charged for extra things. Friendly customer service is a big plus too. I've been here many times and will keep coming back!
Hands down the best shop Iâve ever been to in Ames. Danny and his crew are amazing and got me in really quickly. I had to replace suspension parts and Danny talked me through everything that was needed. When something went wrong, they got me in very quickly and fixed my problem! Easily the best auto repair shop in Ames. Let me explain. I've tried about 5 other auto shops in town over the past 5 years, I started with Car-X initially and then tried others because they had more appealing "deals". Everywhere else I tried had inadequate work and explanations for that work and the fixes they performed would quickly undo themselves. Some places (Midas) even did extra damage to my vehicle with cigarette burns on my seats. Fast forward to today and I went back to Car-X for what I knew would be a plethora of repairs and they did incredible work, gave thorough explanations, and did it all for a fair price. For the rest of my time in Ames, I will be trusting all of my car repairs to Car-X.
By far one of the best experiences Iâve had going to any auto shop. They were quick to get back to me on my appointment request and worked with me to find a time that I could get in. I didnât get his name but the guy working the front desk was very nice and friendly. He explained everything on my courtesy inspection without making it seem like he knew more than me. Itâs hard to come by treatment like that especially as a woman going alone. Iâll definitely be returning for next time.
We were stranded in Ames after the check engine light started flashing in our van during a road trip. Car-X was able to fit us in same day, and quickly diagnosed and repaired our vehicle. Thank you Car-X!
We've taken our vehicles there a couple times now and their service each time has been consistently good. On our fourth time in last month, we mentioned our Honda was pulling to the right. Their technician checked the alignment and several other things and couldn't figure it out. They returned the vehicle to us free of charge and let us know that their most experienced mechanic was out on vacation. They provided clear instructions and we brought it back in when David would be back in. He figured out the issue within a day. When Kathy called with the estimate she provided a couple recommendations, worked with us on budget, and gave us a clear timeline.I can't thank them enough! This vehicle will be going to an out-of-state college with our oldest for his freshman year, and I feel like we're seeing him off with confidence. GREAT job!
I never write reviews but felt like I needed to this time. I had a really great experience for my first oil change here and never felt pressured to spend more money than I needed to. They were also very fast in getting me scheduled and I thought the staff here were incredibly friendly. Probably the cheapest Iâve ever paid for synthetic oil! I will definitely be back!!!
I've only ever been here for oil changes, so I can't speak about the other services, but I've always had a good experience. In my older car I had a few things wrong, and they told me about them but never pressured me into having to fix them. Most recently with my new car, I had to ask them if there was anything wrong, and they said No, the vehicle is in great shape- which is strange for me to hear, but in a good way. The staff member at the time, Daniel, is friendly, and they had my car back to me pretty quick- even when there was other cars with bigger issues ahead of me. The price was average, but not ridiculous.
They have always treated me right. Asked for an estimate on brake pads and rotors and was told I am good to go for awhile longer. Not many places are this honest and helpful.
First time using Car-X for an oil change and it was a great experience. Easy to get an appointment, job was done in under 45 minutes, friendly service and good price. I like that it also included a tire rotation and a few other checks. They didn't try to push me to get any other services done.
Our son was moving from Minneapolis to Ames for a new job on 1/8 when the tire just fell off his car when he was in the middle of nowhere. We had had this car in to be evaluated to make sure it would be able to make the drive by a shop up here in Minneapolis and was assured that everything was fine. Long story short, I called and talked to Danny and he assured me that we could drop off our car, they would get it fixed, and they could hold onto the car until we were in town again. Very reasonably priced and super professional!
I needed service late in the day on a Saturday. It was simple work on my spare, but they were the only store I was finding open and I was arriving in the last 15 minutes they were open, I hate being that guy to shows up at the last minute with new work but they got my spare right in and had me out the door a few minutes later. I was happy to find a store open that could do what I needed when I needed it.
Extremely nice team! Very fast, I took my car in on Thursday morning and got it back Friday afternoon. The part I needed was out of state so they went out of state to get it! Good pricing, clean lobby. They took the time to explain things to me in terms I understood. Will definitely be going back! Thank you guys!!!
Owning a '97 4Runner, it stands to reason that I would need to have a mechanic I trust. Over the years, through normal wear and tear, I've needed everything from tire service and oil changes, to muffler, clutch, suspension and electrical work (and more I'm forgetting). The team at the Ames CarX has handled it all efficiently and effectively. Despite not knowing the proper lingo for various maladies, the team listens attentively to me and makes notes to make sure they address my concerns. I feel confident that they are caring for my vehicle the way they would for their own family.
Amazing service, front counter very welcoming and kind! I had a little wait for my car as I should, and I had a great conversation with the front counter associate. I am having a hard time as a lot of things are hitting me all at once, and you guys were super helpful and kind with all of it. You guys really made my day, and uplifted my mood. I stopped in only to inquire about an appointment and they got me in and repaired the same day! I realize this isn't always possible but I was so impressed with their quick service.Nice and friendly staff goes a long way.
Great friendly staff polite and helpful and they do not do anything extra without discussing with you 1st.Such as there was a hole in the airconditiong leaking out,and that's why no airconditer for car. So replaced it after discussing with my friend 1st and what extra charge was . I love this place.
Have been a customer here for years and never take my car anywhere else and will continue to bring any future cars here. I've had many issues with my car and every time they have been honest and given me the best price to fix it and have shown me exactly what's wrong with it. They will never rush you into fixing something that doesn't need fixed right away. That's why I drive over 30 minutes just to get an oil change. I've never gotten less than 10 star service when Nathan and David are there. I've recommended this shop to everyone I know

All my experiences with this shop have been WONDERFUL. Great people and amazing service. I have been nervous, coming from a small town, when any maintenance comes up on my truck but they have had my back every time. Will continue to bring my vehicles to them for sure and am now confident if I have any troubles they will take care of it even if it is out of their way. Above and beyond for sure!
